A MANTRA WITH A CLEAR PURPOSE

BETTER THAN is a powerful frame of mind! Better Than is beauty, symmetry and function. Use it every moment of every day. Better Than is fortunato. (To read the essay by artist Gordy Grundy, click here.)

I want to leave everywhere I go,
better than I found it.
I want to leave everyone I meet,
better for the encounter.

This is wonderful. A great expression with such a positive message. I've been using it at many times a day since I first read it. It has so benefitted my own conduct and mindset while also enriching the activities of my daily routine. Can't wait to send it to friends!

The first part of this "mantra" was one of the dicta of the Girl Scouts when I was a member long ago. "Leave every place better than you found it." I love how you added "Leave everyone you meet better for the encounter" to it. (AND teaching it to my students!)

This is the "only game in town".
This opens up the possibilities of life to an endlessly larger scale, leaving the crushing confines of the ego behind. This IS!

"Better than" is fabulous--simple, functional...possibilities to an endlessly larger scale, but also to the smallest scale. I can't wait to see "Better than" on billboards, athletes' shoes, spray-painted on highway overpasses...

P. J. O'Rourke

Maybe it's time to raise the bar, to accept the challenge that each of us CAN do better. It's not good enough let us all do as we damn well please; it's time to expect something better.
